About the Author

Born in Yorkshire, Liz Smith fled the nest to study in the ‘wicked’ city of London. She spent a happy cloistered life teaching and raising a family in the small Hertfordshire town of Harpenden. Then her husband John was relocated to Munich and the family scattered to Sydney, London and Munich. Liz and her youngest daughter followed John to Munich in 1999, unable to speak the language and knowing no one. Through volunteering in her daughter’s school, Liz had the opportunity to build a network of friends and work snowballed. She became a supply teacher in an international school, final editor of a glossy magazine and English teacher to business people in a diverse array of companies.

Naturally gregarious, Liz made several close friends, first with expats (though within the next two years many of them left the country) but also with others in this high-tech, cosmopolitan city. She got to know several native Bavarians who introduced her to the finer points of Munich culture—the wonderful array of museums, many different types of music, Oktoberfest, Christmas markets, street festivals and traditional costumes.
